The erotic museum of Paris

You booked your paris holiday apartments and have been walking down the city for days seeing sights and visiting museums. Suddenly you realize that today you are really in the mood for something else but don´t know where to look. If this is how you feel sometimes then head to the Montmartre district to find a very interesting museum.

There are plenty of museums to be found in Paris. Louvre is of course the most well known with the Mona Lisa painting and the statua of the Venus of Milo. If you are looking for something else for a change then head towards the boulevard de Clichy number 72 and into the Musée de l´Erotisme or in English The Erotic Museum.

You can find an erotic museum in almost every tourist city of the world nowadays and you do not have to be embarrased to go in there because it is visited by grown ups of all ages wether it be couples or singles. This particular museum could not be located in a better fitting street. The boulevard de Clichy is in the neighbourhood Pigalle, which has been known for it´s sexclubs since the years of the can-can and also locates the famous cabaret theatre Moulin Rouge.

Don´t expect this museum to be just a rarity because of the other buildings in the street, it is a serious museum. 2 Frenchmen collected erotic and pornographic art for 30 years before they transformed a former cabaret into this 7 story museum in order to exhibit their collection. You will find a combination of the vast collection and some temporary exhibitions divided over this flours with the occasional dancing bondage guy on the top floor, who is definitely worth a visit.

The exhibition ranges from statues and paintings from all over the world to a 20th century pornographic movie, but the most interesting part for me was the collection on Paris brothels before the gouvernment decided to close them all down halfway the 20th century. Being Dutch myself I am quite used to hearing and seeing a lot about modern day brothels and able to see how different it is from then.

One couple once enjoyed the museum so much that they had themselves lock up in it during the night. When they got tired of it in the early morning they just called some of the personnel untill one was nice enough to come and free them.

To reach the museum you can take three different metro lines: metro 2 to Blanche, metro 12 to Pigalle or metro 13 to Place de Clichy, the first one gets you closest to the museum. So, get up of the couch of your paris apartments and in a straight line to the erotic museum!
