Steps For Putting Scripture to Music

Almost more than anything, I love turning Scripture into songs for kids to sing! Memorizing the Bible is super easy if you sing the verses. Think about all the songs you were taught as a child that you can still sing. After all these years, that information has never really gone out of your mind. How much more important is the ability to retain God’s Word, than to know your ABC’s and that the little star above twinkles?

A simply melody and Bible verse combined turns into children’s Bible songs and implants God’s Word into out hearts. How do you go through the process of matching music to Scripture?

I use the following 5 tips when writing my own Scripture music:

Find words that rhyme. Sometimes a Scripture will lend itself very nicely to this poetic form, where a Bible verse won’t always have rhyming words. You can create a melody line by using the rhyming pattern as you think best.

Bible verses have main words so determine which are the main words. Since the word “gave” was the main one for me from John 3:16, I emphasized this word when I turned the verse into a song. The repetition helped out my melody and emphasis. You can also accompany the song with fun motions.

In the cases where there are no rhyming words, just repeat the melody line. All too often though, Bible verses won’t rhyme. The only thing you would need to do is to choose the lines that fit best with the melody that will be repeated in the song. It is the melody, not the words, that “rhymes” in this case.

The melody line should portray the emotions you want to express. Are you looking for something snappy or perhaps something more soothing to listen to? What accompanies your lyrics & what emotions do you wish to put across? To make the words stick in your mind, the emotion this creates does as much as the melody.

Lastly, the reference to the verse must be added. I think it’s essential that the Scripture song should contain the Bible verse’s address. Getting creative, can be easily done by you here. You don’t need to include the reference in the song’s ending if you don’t want to. It can be put first or in the midst of the song.

Steps For Joining Music With Scripture

One of my favorite things to do is to help kids by putting Scripture to music! Singing a verse can make Bible memorization quite easy. Consider the number of tunes you remember that you picked up when you were very young. After all these years, that information has never really gone out of your mind. You need to learn the alphabet and it’s fun to be able to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” but you may really want your child to learn biblical stories too.

A simply melody and Bible verse combined turns into Bible songs and implants God’s Word into out hearts. But how does one get started putting Scripture to music?

I use the following 5 tips when writing my own Scripture music:

Find rhyming words. Verses in the Bible do not necessarily have words that rhyme, but quite often they do seem to fit with this form of poetry. You can create a melody line by using the rhyming pattern as you think best.

You will need to find the most important word or words in the Bible verse. When putting John 3:16 to music, I repeated the word “gave” to emphasize it. Repeating the verse made it stand out as i wished when set to the melody. My children really like making the movements it helped me come up with to accompany the music too.

You should repeat the melody line if there aren’t any words that rhyme. rhyming is not often done in Bible verses. The only thing you would need to do is to choose the lines that fit best with the melody that will be repeated in the song. So really it’s the melody that is “rhyming,” not the words.

Be certain the melodic content causes the emotion you wish to convey. Would you prefer a soft melody or an upbeat, fast tune? What feelings do you want to convey and what goes with your verse? The melody and the emotion created both work to make the words stick in your mind.

Lastly, the reference to the verse must be added. When you write a Scripture song, it is very important to include the “address” of the Bible verse. Getting creative, can be easily done by you here. At the end of the song, don’t feel like you have to put the reference. It can be put first or in the midst of the song.
