On any day meteors are a key element of astronomy today for that day. 2008 certainly was no different. Meteor swarms such as the Taurids in Leonids were quite active in November. Into was a full moon in December washing out the Gemenids. No need to worry. Whereas the peak only happens for a short time meteor showers continue for as much as two weeks before and two weeks after the peak. So people can still see the amazing view.
A moon return was often discussed for astronomy today in the year 2008. Many countries would participate in this exciting undertaking. The goal may be to establish a moon base or even a colony on the moon. Hard to believe. The old science-fiction show Space 1999 may soon come to life.
Space garbage, a used up tank, was often discussed when people talked about astronomy today. After being thrown into orbit, it was finally about to plummet back to the planet. Some people were concerned that pieces might fall into populated areas. The good news is that it all fell into the ocean.
Hubble was probably the biggest news in astronomy today in 2008. Bear was the saga of damage which took a month to repair. Then the Hubble took the first ever visible light image of a planet orbiting another star. Hubble telescope sure had a full year.
