Background checks are conducted to gather more information about a particular individual or to verify the information already provided for. It’s basically scrutinizing the person’s past, including his criminal record, his credit record, his previous employment record and even his medical or dental records. Background checks can give a very detailed, comprehensive report about a particular person.

These days, many businesses, organizations and institutions are instituting a background check policy. Some organizations incorporate background checks in the application process. Conducting free background checks is about an essential a step in the recruitment process as a face-to-face interview. Companies, especially those dealing with security, or high-risk positions such as in hospitals and airlines, have a background check policy so as to make sure that their employees are people who have credibility, integrity and who are trustworthy. This process enables organizations to protect not only themselves, but their other staff, as well as their most valued asset, their clients and customers. Conducting a background check on prospective employees enables companies to sift out the good from the bad, so to speak, and determine which ones are most suited to be part of the company. A good background check can spell the difference between life and death, between a good reputation or a reputation tainted by lawsuits resulting from negligence.

Traditionally, free background checks were conducted after an individual has accepted an offer to work for the company. These days, the background check is performed during the application process. Organizations of every kind, from universities, to Churches, from hospitals to restaurants, all employ a background check policy. In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, many people are becoming more and more suspicious of their employees. Concerns can range from an employees’ immigration status, to his health status and even his financial situation. Some companies may have been employing people who are illegal immigrants or those with a criminal history.

Critics have said that conducting background checks can destroy civil liberties such as a person’s right to privacy. Because of issues such as this, other laws and policies were instituted to protect both the state and the individual. Background check policies were established but these vary according to state, county, even company or organization. A clear background check policy states that no background check can be conducted on an individual without his consent. A person must give his permission before a company performs free background checks on him.
