MPAA Takes PeekVid to Court in Linking Law Case

If you’ve ever taken a look at the offerings of YouTube, Daily Motion, or other video sharing sites, you’re probably well aware that illegal content is abundant there. But the sites must remove the offending content if the copyright owner asks them to, and they usually comply to avoid legal problems. But sites such as PeekVid.com that link to this content are facing legal battles of their own.

The MPAA has sued PeekVid for linking to Illegally Copied Material that is hosted elsewhere. While it may seem strange that they would go after those who link to the content rather than the ones hosting it, it is actually easier for them to make a case against the linking sites.

Hyperlinking Law is somewhat unfamiliar territiory, and the results of cases such as this will have a direct effect on its future interpretations and enforcement. Those who link to Copyrighted Material would do well to follow this case closely to see what becomes of PeekVid and Internet Linking Law.
