As all woodworkers know you can spend many years as well as a small fortune purchasing woodworking tools. But there are a couple of vital tools for a home workshop. There are three must have tools that every do-it-yourself woodworking shop should have. The first is a good tablesaw they can be used for ripping and crosscutting. The second is a band saw although many things that can be accomplished with a band saw can also be done with a saber saw I believe the band saw is an absolute. Lastly finally every wood shop needs to have a router.

Table saws basically come in three different configurations a contractors style table saw, a hybrid table saw and a cabinet style table saw. The contractors configuration is usually the cheapest and is built to collapse and be stowed in the back of a truck, this makes it a good option for the homeowner who has limited space. A cabinet style table saw is usually larger and comes with a 3 hp motor on it and can accommodate a 10 inch blade. These are meant to be used in a fixed so you need to have a dedicated spot for it. They are usually larger than the other styles of table saws and are built to last for decades. A hybrid table saw falls in between the two is usually lighter built like that of the contractors table saw but built in a cabinet these are a good option for the wood worker on a budget.

Routers are an indispensable tool that every wood worker should have. Today router bits can be purchasedin an unlimited number of different configuration. Whether you just need to chamfer an edge or you are building cabinet a woodworking router is a must-have. Router bits are available with three different shank sizes quarter inch, 3/8″ and 1/2″ most router bits on the market today are carbide tipped.

A band saw lets the wood worker to cut intricate curves and circles and also lets the wood worker to re-saw their stock. Yes one can cut intricate curves with a saber saw but the band saw will let you to do this much faster and with greater accuracy. Band saws are available in a bench top style or a floor model. Bench top models usually have a smaller throat clearance, usually in the 6 inch range while floor models usually start out at about 12 inches and go up from there most of your larger commercial band saws have a least a 20 inch throat.
