Steps For Joining Music With Scripture

One of my favorite things to do is to help kids by putting Scripture to music! Singing a verse can make Bible memorization quite easy. Consider the number of tunes you remember that you picked up when you were very young. After all these years, that information has never really gone out of your mind. You need to learn the alphabet and it’s fun to be able to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” but you may really want your child to learn biblical stories too.

A simply melody and Bible verse combined turns into Bible songs and implants God’s Word into out hearts. But how does one get started putting Scripture to music?

I use the following 5 tips when writing my own Scripture music:

Find rhyming words. Verses in the Bible do not necessarily have words that rhyme, but quite often they do seem to fit with this form of poetry. You can create a melody line by using the rhyming pattern as you think best.

You will need to find the most important word or words in the Bible verse. When putting John 3:16 to music, I repeated the word “gave” to emphasize it. Repeating the verse made it stand out as i wished when set to the melody. My children really like making the movements it helped me come up with to accompany the music too.

You should repeat the melody line if there aren’t any words that rhyme. rhyming is not often done in Bible verses. The only thing you would need to do is to choose the lines that fit best with the melody that will be repeated in the song. So really it’s the melody that is “rhyming,” not the words.

Be certain the melodic content causes the emotion you wish to convey. Would you prefer a soft melody or an upbeat, fast tune? What feelings do you want to convey and what goes with your verse? The melody and the emotion created both work to make the words stick in your mind.

Lastly, the reference to the verse must be added. When you write a Scripture song, it is very important to include the “address” of the Bible verse. Getting creative, can be easily done by you here. At the end of the song, don’t feel like you have to put the reference. It can be put first or in the midst of the song.

Can JDate com Pull Enough Weight?

For several years, JDate com (www.jdate.com) was one of the best sites for Jewish singles to place their online profiles and meet others of a similar background and outlook. But this site is one that has recently seen a falling off of subscribers, causing a reduction in profits for the site owner, Spark Networks, in the first two quarters of 2009. Spark owns an array of relationship websites, including www.americansingles.com, www.christianmingle.com, and many other sites for ethnic and social groups. But it’s the Jewish dating site www.jdate.com (situated in the United States, the UK, France and Israel), along with www.jewishmingle.com, that carry most of the weight when it comes to the financial health of the company.

The reason for the reduction of profits from www.jdate.com and the other Jewish personals dating sites might stem partly from the economic downturn that has affected much of the world in recent months. Yet that can’t be the whole story, since all of the other networks, including www.americansingles.com, www.catholicmingle.com, and so on, turned a slight profit. So perhaps there was a flaw inherent in the Jewish dating internet sites themselves that contributed to their losing subscribers and, therefore, income for the company.

This appears to have been the problem. Even though JDate com was used by so many, it had been criticized as being too “clunky.” So if people needed to start cutting corners because of the slow economy, they might have been more inclined to cut membership on a site that didn’t operate as easily as others did. Spark Networks seems to think that was the case, at least, since the company produced a “face lift” for the site just in time for the summer of 2009. The improvements include a more modern design and better profile pages, enhanced search features, the JBlog for members, and a new video section.

Adam Berger, CEO of Spark Networks, notes that even if the other dating sites turn a small profit, the Jewish singles dating sites still bring in the “lion’s share” of profits for the company. Naturally, it’s important that the other sites continue to turn a profit and contribute to the overall health of the business, but it’s still most important that the Jewish sites be returned to profitability. Spark clearly hopes that this upturn will begin with the recent redesign of the JDate com site.

New Ways of Dating Jewish

Young Jewish people, such as New York Jewish singles, may encounter difficulty meeting people in the city they can date and marry, while still trying to ensure they are dating Jewish people whose lifestyles and outlooks match their own. It may surprise some people to realize that the concept of speed dating was actually initiated by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo for this purpose. These speed dates, along with online dating services, are helping young Jewish people find each other.

Considering that speed dating was invented to help Orthodox Jewish singles meet and marry each other, that might turn on its head the notion that this way of meeting was designed for the more modern, hip, and perhaps even revolutionary young persons. Personals ads were regarded as questionable just a few years ago, even for those whose lifestyle was more open, so something like speed dating may be thought of as too unusual for very conservative young people to use when finding and dating Jewish partners. But on the other hand, with cultural values no longer being clearly defined within one’s own circle, and time constraints making it difficult to meet people in other ways, new methods of encountering potential partners are perhaps needed.

Speed dating has been adopted by the world in general, but it’s one of the methods Jewish young people still use. Other Jewish dating services have developed with the growth of the internet, so Jewish singles can enter their personal data and view the data of others, initiating some sort of contact if they find someone who seems interesting. Or some sites suggest potential matches for them, and they can decide if they want to pursue contact with any of those people. While the online method is now a large component in most partner searches, there are still non-internet-based Jewish singles events, and a speed dating event is just one of the possibilities available.

In a way, one might regard these online dating sites and speed date events as new versions of the more traditional Jewish matchmaking. After all, what did a matchmaker do except try to correlate characteristics between the prospective bride and groom? The criteria might once have been different, possibly based more on economics and utility than on matching personalities. But modern ways of dating Jewish partners may now be adapting the old matchmaking methods to put people together not just for economic and practical reasons, but based on personality, culture and values as well.

Discovering the Jewish Calendar

It was Hillel II who created a standarised Jewish calendar and leap year. It meant that holidays could be celebrated on the same date every year for Jews.

Rather like the most conventional calendar used, the Jewish one has months that are 29 or 30 days long and 12 or 13 months per year. Beacuse it actually takes 12.4 lunar months to complete a yearly cycle (365 and a quarter days), a year does not divide neatly into 12 months. The earliest Jews relied on seeing the new moon to judge when the beginning of the month would be.The Sanhendrin will declare the first of the month, also called rosh chodesh once the people observed the new moon. The agricultural cycle also has something to do with the number of months in each year.Adar Bet or the additional month is added on the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th year of the whole 19 years cycle for the Jews.

The Hebrew Calendar

The name for the official Israeli calendar is the Hebrew Calendar. As soon as the new moon is seen, a new month will begin. Months in the Hebrew calendar are called: Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz, Av, Elul, Tishrei, Cheshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat and Adar. The leap year in Jewish calendars makes it possible that each holiday is celebrated on the same season every year.

Festivals

Festivals in the Jewish calendar are still widely observed, and accordance with tradition is usually quite strict. They are already part of the customs of the people and they have been mirrors of the national life of the Jews.

Jewish Holidays

Jews place a great deal of importance on celebrating the holiday dates in the calendar. Each holiday provides a good opportunity for people to reflect on their life and the year that has passed. These holidays promote the sense of being one with fellow believers. The day of rest is the Shabbat (or Sabbath) and is the most important day of the week. There are other days during the year when working is not allowed, and they are centred around festivals of Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. Also, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kipper are kept as days of rest.

Jewish days start during sunset so in celebrating the holidays, usually some confusion arises. Some still follow the ancient practice of adding an extra day to their holidays while others stick to having the holiday just for a day. Usually, festivities start on the evening before the main day’s events occur.
