Tips For Gaining Respect As A Young Business Owner

Many young people are looking to start their own business instead of working for others. They are hard-working individuals with great entrepreneurial skills. But one of the biggest obstacles in their pathway to success is their age. The business world often doesn’t consider them to be mature enough to deal with them on an equal footing. However, looking at the amazing success-rate of some young millionaires like Bill Gates, young business owners are nowadays being given the respect and attention that they deserve. Still, if you are a young entrepreneur, you will have to gain the trust and respect of both the customers and other people from the business world through your work and behavior. Here are some pointers to help you get them:

• Get the right education: Education is the key that unlocks the door to many opportunities. Having a degree in business management will bring you instant respect from other business owners whereas a high-school degree won’t be taken so seriously. Among the management schools, many offer courses on entrepreneurship. Taking up that course will not only make you ready for the business, but also help you gain recognition from your peers. If you cannot go for a course, the next best thing you can opt for is an internship session. Don’t take it as a job, but as a course on how actual business worlds work. If you can, do your internship with a successful company from such an industry where you are planning to join. Thus, you will have first-hand knowledge of the market, which will prove to be invaluable when you start out on your own! Your confidence and knowledge will impress the “old guards” and you will definitely help you to earn your place in the business world.

• Dress properly: No one will take you seriously if you come to meet your bankers in sleeveless tees and tattered jeans! So, dress according to the situation. It doesn’t mean that you have to be in suit and tie all the time, but clean and proper attire will certainly help you gain respect. Keep an eye on your shoes as well, as an unclean shoe may make the potential customer/supplier feel that you don’t pay enough attention to details. Always keep in mind that first impression is essential in gaining respect in the business world.

• Behave maturely: Your behavior will decide whether you will be taken seriously or not. So, reach in time for your meetings and always try to keep your commitments. Return calls and mails within a reasonable time and be polite to your customers. Display your leadership qualities whenever required and think twice before saying anything vital. Inappropriate jokes, talking non-stop about yourself and brazen display of arrogance will only make people doubt your maturity level. Also, learn to write good emails. Never make grammatical or spelling mistakes, as that can really put off your future business contacts.

• Talk to your mentors and ask them for advice: There are various reasons why people favor established players over the new ones. The main reason is that the former has experience, which the latter lacks. So, talk to your mentors and never hesitate to ask for advice. Asking for knowledge will not demean your position as a new entrepreneur; it will show how eager you are to learn about the business. It will also open new doors and avenues for you.
