FEMME FATALES – THE ARCHITYPAL DESTRUCTIVE FIGURES
By: Bakul

One example of femme fatale is the character Matty Walker in Kathleen turner’s Body heat. The way she seduces Ned Racine, a hunky lawyer, is one of the finest example of how THIS archetypal figure can lure a man to think with all his body parts other than brain.
There is a story of a femme fatale related to Henry VIII, the former defender of the faith. Anne Boleyn’s seductive charms made him begin struggles with the Roman Catholic Church and this led Henry VIII to separate the Church of England from Papal Authority. He wished to put an end to hiss married life and marry a younger and alluring woman and therefore he discarded the religion he could uphold if Anne Boleyn had not come into his life.

These sexy female fatales can charm a man to such extent that he can follow all her commands without giving any thought to the consequence. There are several mentions of femme fatales in the Bible which includes Deliah, the sexy femme fatale who could trick Sampson to get his infamous hair cut and also the seductive Salome whose tempting dance demanded from Herod to get John the Bapist beheaded.

There have been classic movies based on the femme fatales like Double Indemnity which bring out the femme fatale to be reckoned with. The movie Basic Instinct demonstrates the how the seductive power of a vamp can lead to a man to commit crime as murder. There has been use of femme fatale figures in the English and American literature like Oscar Wilde’s Salome, Dashiell Hammett’s Brigid O’Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon, and John Steinbeck’s manipulative. Not only this, we also have comic figures of femme fatales like batman’s
Catwoman and Poison Ivy, and Daredevil’s Elektra.

This is the whole idea of femme fatales and we never have witnessed them in a romantic novel as a heroine. Still it’s a question whether they will remain with only flaws or will be transformed into sympathetic figures.
