As more and more people are choosing to holiday on the North Yorkshire coast, they are increasingly opting to stay in Whitby. This once famous whaling and fishing town has become more popular over the last decades resulting in a sharp rise in tourism.
One can easily see why the town is so popular. It is a town of two parts, the East side and the West side divided by the River Esk. Set in a natural harbour on this rugged coastline, and with the advantage of three beaches, this holiday destination is ideal for families. The typical summer beach holiday for a week or so during the summer holidays or a weekend away, or indeed a mid week break, are many of the choices available.
The accommodation choice available over the last years has increased tremendously, ranging from hotels to campsites. But for many, the choice of a holiday cottage is by far the preferred option.
Because of its history and fishing traditions, there are many ‘fisherman's cottages' renovated and transformed into holiday accommodation. Many of these cottages are to be found around the harbour area on both the east and west sides of the town.
From humble beginnings these updated holiday cottages can offer a high level or décor and facilities. Many of the cottages are registered with either the local tourist office or holiday letting agents. Both of these sources are in association with the English Tourist Board This offers a degree of certainty with regard to the standards of the accommodation. The English Tourist Board sets certain standards which must be adhered to. They give graded levels similar to that of hotels. This grading gives the potential visitor a degree of certainty with regard to standards expected by each establishment. There are a wide range of different styles of cottages ranging from the olde worlde quaint to the contemporary style. There are a wide range of publications available to advertise and promote the cottages i.e. holiday guides and brochures. With the advent of the internet, increasing number of visitors can view and book their intended holiday accommodation online.
Various types of holiday cottage accommodation can be found in and around the town and on the outskirts of Whitby. Those slightly out of the centre are more likely to have private parking. One of the main advantages of the self-catering holiday cottages is the freedom allowed to the visitor. No need to worry about breakfast and evening meal times, no need to vacate the premises early morning and no curfew of an evening! As with all forms of accommodation, there are prices to suit most budgets.
As previously stated, over the last decades the holiday trade has increased immensely resulting in large investments in the town. To complement the holiday cottage trade, there has been a knock on effect on the number of restaurants and cafes opening for business. As Whitby has become more well-known through the media with regard to television and newspaper articles, so to has the holiday season expanded. Events such as the Goths Weekend in the spring and the autumn together with the timetable events on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway have extended the season from just the summer months. No longer does the town ‘close' for the winter, but rather it continues all year round thanks to the accommodation providers catering to the demand.
It is anticipated that the holiday cottage accommodation sector will go from strength to strength in accordance with the number of visitors wishing to stay in the wonderfully picturesque town of Whitby ensuring the tourism industry flourishes in years to come.
