"Buy Kiwi Made" is a local Government plan aimed at assisting awareness of nz products and recommending New Zealanders to use a nz shop. The directive is encouraging domestic manufacturers to label their items as Kiwi made. It uses the strap line "Buy Kiwi and We've Got it Made". Produd nz products adopted the practice, and every respectable nz shop supported the campaignas well. It's complementary to the Buy NZ Made Campaign Ltd which was created in 1988 and which licenses use of the kiwi in a triangle logo. NZ manufacturers, retailers and the Government have been involved in promoting the 'Buy NZ Made' concept since 1908, then in Apr 2008 Buy Kiwi Made celebrated 100 years of supporting Kiwi made nz products retailed at a nz shop.
After the most recent elections, discussions were had between the Green Party and New Zealand's Labour Party that ended up in the formation of the government. A Buy Kiwi Made directive also originated out of those discussions and Rod Donald was emplyed as a Government spokesperson for the campaign.
After some months of the election, and after Rod Donald's passing, the Labour party refused a joint Australian-New Zealand strategy to mandate location of production labeling for food nz products, which was perceived as some as a blunt rejection of the Buy Kiwi Made initiative's principles; especially by your average nz shop owner and their shoppers.
The Buy Kiwi Made iniative assisting the Buy Kiwi Made and Buy New Zealand Made initiatives included the inception of a significant Buy NZ Made nz shop & nz products portal. The www.buykiwimade.govt.nz/ Buy New Zealand Made website was launched in March 2007. It has disappointingly been dioscontinued. The Buy New Zealand Made media campaign was concluded in June 2009. NZ Shop ownsers and producers of nz products in the private sector still use the Buy Kiwi Made Campaign, and will always advertise the kiwi in a triangle insignia, as well as encourage gifting of NZ products available at the various nz shop sites.
