The Spectical at Shirley Heights
Content Its Sunday 21st February 2010 we are in Antigua and tonight we are going to Shirley Heights, its about a 40 minute drive from Galley Bay and we arrive around 4.45pm and pay the entrance fee of $7.00 US per person, and the place is rammed to the rafters with tourists and Deckhands from the Super Yachts moored in English Harbour and Nelson Dockyard, if your a boat lover like me, have a stroll around the Harbours some amazing Vessels.
You need to get up to Shirley Heights pretty early for your spot to watch the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea looking towards Montserrat and at the same time enjoying the Sounds of a 20 strong Steel Band playing some lively music while sipping on a Rum Punch and I mean sipping they are extremely strong and the merriness can creep up on you unexpected, don't get too near the edge its a long way down to English Harbour.
When the sun has set and darkness falls its about 7pm the tourists have left the Steel Band is replaced by what I can only describe as Antigua's own version of the Black Eyed Peas the lead male singer a spitting image of Will I am dread locks and all, a really great sound playing and singing songs we all recognised. Now Shirley Heights is buzzing as more and more locals turn up and dance the night away, there’s a great tasting barbeque and more rum punch to help wash bbq chicken down. Captain Sean turned up and showed Shelly the Antiguan dance moves, a bit up close and personal at times, but the expression on Shelly's face made up for that it was so funny.
As the night drew to a close a slight waft of herbal smoke filled the air, if your into the herbal stuff, be careful police spotters are in the crowd plain cloths of course and mixing in with locals and tourists. Before we new it the taxi had arrived to take us back to Galley Bay, the young driver, we think brought his girl friend on a date she had a lovely voice singing all the way back to theGalley Bay looking adoringly into the drivers eyes. All in all Shirley Heights is well worth a visit on a Sunday night but my advise take a taxi midweek a bottle of something and a picnic with no $7.00 US to pay no music just you and the Sunset.
