Menorca Guide
By: Mark Bartley

Holidays in Menorca have for centuries been cherished by a range of discerning tourists seeking a sanctuary away from the bitter winters of Northern Europe. More recently, the popularity of package tours has seen many a Mediterranean coast flourish with the development and crowds of new resorts. Yet Menorca has managed to retain much of its rural and coastal charm. With some luxurious and convenient places to stay and a wealth of sights and activities for the whole family, holidays in Menorca offer a leisurely combination of great food, some inspirational outdoor activities and plenty of space to just do your own thing and experience the true exotic nature of this varied and beautiful island. Menorca villas are some of the best in the Med, many right on the beach and designed to blend modern convenience and the essential character of this charming island, giving visitors the opportunity to relax and unwind in exceptional comfort.

With a long history steeped in Prehistoric, Minoan and Moorish culture, Menorca's past is obvious in its variety of stone monuments, ancient towns and artefacts. As a strategic shipping port and staging post in the Mediterranean, Menorca's links with maritime trade continue to this day as a popular destination for cruise ships, a vibrant local fishing community and the setting for all kinds of watersports.

With more beaches than both Mallorca and Ibiza together, Menorca's coastline is ever-changing, accessible and packed with things to do, from boating to windsurfing, snorkelling to canoeing. Despite being known as the smallest of the Balearic Islands, which is what its name translates as, Menorca has fewer visitors and is far more personal Mediterranean holiday destination. This is reflected in the way you experience a great range of water and beach sports. Menorca holidays are a great chance to experience something new, if you fancy trying a luxury beach holiday that involves more than just resting in the sun.

There's a sense of a slower pace of life, so while you might be seeking the thrills of jet skiing or sailing, there's that much-needed calm and understated attitude that pervades the Menorcan way of life. After a day's hiking on the coastal paths or taking to the warm and breezy surf, there's nothing like wandering into an old Menorcan village to sip coffee with the locals at the end of the day. If you want a quiet beach to paddle and sit in peace, then try Cala Pregonda, with light sand and clear blue waters for unspoilt beauty. Venture over to Cala Santa Galdana for boating or swimming and a range of other water sports. A blend of tourism and ecology, from here you can explore Menorca's stunning coastline, by boat or on foot – truly a beach that offers something for all the family.

The resort of Punta Prima on the south east of Menorca; a very large and action packed beach, attracting windsurfers and sailing enthusiasts to its perfect conditions. This is not really a beach for swimming - rather a wind-powered centre of action and fun. As well as plenty of geological places of interest such as the Bronze Age cultural and engineering wonder of the Cales Coves, there is always an activity option when you need a change from the beach life.

The Menorcan countryside is an amazing combination of space and natural vistas, environmental reserves and charming rural villages. From big city fiestas to small town festivals, to a simple yet freshly caught seafood dish in a sleepy fishing village, the appeal of Menorca to sports lovers goes far beyond outstanding beaches and clean, clear waters.

Getting there and places to stay - Menorca also wins on these fronts. With regular flights to Menorca from the UK,transfer times from airport to resorts are minimal. Villas in Menorca are part of the attraction to the active yet style-conscious visitor, with every modern facility and service, all geared to inspire you to explore this beautiful island.

Europe has a selection of superb holiday destinations and holidays in Menorca are part of the selection available. The island is welcoming, convenient, a wealth of lovely beaches and great for families or sports tourists.
