Exploring The Rhodes Old Town – Monasteries And Churches
By: Frank Jaeger

A wide variety of Monasteries and Churches are a great source of blessing to the medieval Town Rhodes. Some of these most famous
churches and monasteries of this place include:

The Monastery of Tsambika

A 300 meters high, tiny & intricate white church can be found near the village, Archangelos. This amazing church can provide you with the pleasures of both coastal views of the north and south of Kolimbia. Apart from this, you can see the interesting statue of the Blessed Virgin of the 11th century on the mountain of this region. You are hence recommended to avail your stay in nearest Rhodes Town Hotels.

According to a prehistoric myth, a childless woman can be blessed with children if she walks and prays to the Virgin barefooted up on the mountain. People, as part of their respect and cult, name their children after the monastery: Tsambikos is used for boys and Tsambika for the girls. Moreover, the day of the saints is celebrated on seventh of September. It is, therefore, a particularly compelling event for the childless women.

St George Monastery

This monastery is also quite near to the fortress of Archangelos. On your entrance to this monastery you will be attracted by the contemporary wall-painting of St George in which he is slaying the dragon. Apart from some good Rhodes Town Hotels, you can easily access the icing sugar tower of the church from this advantageous point.

You can also access a path down to this church via the network of some narrow streets. Crowded by various houses, it is primarily based at the center of the old town. This church possesses a wedding-cake type tower which is visible on various other islands in the Dodecanese group and is quite beautiful. Apart from the more common barrel mausoleum, Cross mausoleum, is a unique feature of church designs on this island.

Panagia’s Domed Church

This church is in the mid of the village, Lindos, which is just off the main square. It is a fifteenth-century cathedral having a dark interior and a black & white stoned floor. Also, it is bedecked with the wall-paintings of the eighteenth-century’s Gregori of Symi. Additionally, the typical division has separated the male- and female-saints on the right and left sides respectively.

Moni Kalopetra

This amazingly white monastery due to the sun-glare can be reached after crossing the Valley of the Butterflies. It owns a silent patio having picnic tables from where you can analyze the landscape thoroughly. Furthermore you can visit Rhodes Town Hotels here and enjoy some light refreshments.

Agios Soulas

This petite church offers a range of close by destinations including tavern, Rhodes Town Hotels, a playground and a racing-track. You will find this place loaded with people on the church’s Saints day (29th & 30th July) due to the popular Donkey Race. A large number of people from around the world come and participate in this huge festival. It is, no doubt a unique experience on the island.

The prominent Paris Hotel is situated at a 5 minutes walking distance from St Francisco Roman Catholic Church (in Rhodes Town). It offers an easy access to the nearest churches and monasteries. Therefore, you will enjoy your trip in Island Rhodes!
