Chardham Yatra A Place To The Salavation
By: Alina

- The Himalayas have been worshipped as the abode of the Gods from time immemorial. Hinduism and Buddhism revere the Mt. Kailash and the Mansarovar Lake region as the holiest of places. It is no big wonder that numerous ancient Shrines lie in the serenity of these lofty heights. Many of the temples and shrines can be reached by road without any real exertion, while some of the pilgrimages are akin to adventure. In the mountains of Uttarakhand (Garhwal & Kumaon) where lofty peaks rise to eternal splendor, are the holy shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. For centuries, saints and pilgrims have walked these mystical valleys known in ancient Hindu scriptures as Kedarkhand. If your are Hindu, then this journey is a must for you, a do or die situation, but if you are not one then there is even a greater motive to come. Is it not causing you an inquisitiveness to know, after all what is there in this journey that makes millions of people flock to India and be part of it? Char Dham is essentially a journey in which the pilgrim has to cover the four major religious sites in Uttaranchal, which is better known as the abode of God. These holy paces are opened for tourists from the period of May to October and the rest of the year they remain unreachable due to chunk of ice they lie covered with. Each of the four holy shrines of the Char Dham is located at a height of 3,000 m above sea level. The four temples in a geographical context form two distinct groups, that of Badrinath-Kedarnath and Gangotri-Yamunotri, with the common starting point at Rishikesh. The region is referred as the land of the gods in the ancient Puranas. Scores of pilgrims visit the shrines by trekking arduously along the mountain paths, all for a communion with the divine. The atmosphere of this place becomes one that of divineness having all the qualities of cleansing the malice of your soul. Thus the Chardham tour will surely provide you great peace in mind.

All these locations are believed to be highly sacred by the Hindu religion. While Kedarnath is home to lord Shiva and Badrinath is home to Lord Vishnu. Yamunotri represent goddess of Shakti Yamuna, and Gangotri represent goddess of Shakti Ganga.
Today, the better infrastructure in the area has given a chance to people of all age to visit these four dhams and fulfill their once a life time desire of encountering the Gods.

Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River and the seat of the goddess Yamuna, is one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. It is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch Parvat The temple of Yamunotri falls on the left bank and was originally constructed by Maharaj Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The temple of Goddess Yamuna is the main pilgrim site and there are many thermal springs in the vicinity. Also present is a divya shila, a rock pillar that is worshipped before entering the Yamunotri temple.

Gangotri is another sacred shrine, situated at an altitude of 3200 mt is the source of the river Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. This sacred spot where Ganga, the stream of life, is said to have touched earth for the first time, presents the vastness of scenic splendor. The verdant valleys, dense forests and towering peaks offer excellent trekking and mountaineering opportunities for adventure enthusiasts.
Gangotri acquires the name Ganga from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda.

Kedarnath is located in Rudraprayag district in the Himalayas, about 3584m above sea level near the head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks. It is the most remote of the four Char Dham sites. Kedarnath, where a form of the Lord Shiva is venerated as one of the twelve jyotirling. The present temple at Kedarnath traces its origins to the 8th century, having been resurrected by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. It stands adjacent to the site of an ancient temple built by the Pandavas. The samadhi or final resting place of Shankaracharya is behind the temple.

Badrinath is the most venerated site of all the four sites and is the seat of Lord Vishnu. The Badrinath Temple, built by Adi Shankar in the 9th century, is the place where you should be reaching this place. Out of the numerous murtis present in this temple, the most important one is that of Lord Vishnu carved of black stone. The temple is simply magnificent in its style and architecture.
