Overpriced, well that depends on what you are looking for in a family vacation. People say to me all the time, “All inclusive resorts are expensive. Why not go someplace cheaper?” I suppose if you are the type of person that sneaks soda into the movie theater or packs a week worth of snacks to save money while on vacation, then all inclusives might seem overpriced compared to traditional pay as you go resorts.
Unfortunately for those people, the new TSA rules prohibit packing a 24 pack of Pepsi in your carry on!
Let’s face it though, spending half your Caribbean vacation stocking up on food at the local market, or eating at MacDonald’s in Montego Bay, just to save a few bucks on meals, really takes away from the whole tropical paradise idea.
For those of us that would rather spend their well deserved vacation sipping cocktails on the beach, then picking up pennies in the streets, I suggest all inclusive family vacations like Beaches Resorts.
Beaches offers all inclusive packages in all price ranges starting at around $130/adult/night at Beaches Sandy Bay in Negril, Jamaica. One of the nice things about beaches is that no matter what room you book, you will have the same basic inclusions. So at that point you are only paying extra for a nicer room. The only exception in this case is some of the highest category rooms offer extra’s like personal Butler service.
With all inclusive family vacations you never have to worry about cutting your children off after their 5th tropical smoothie.
Think of all inclusives like going out to a gourmet All –You-Can - Eat Chinese Buffet. Personally I think those restaurants are a great choice for families with teens. The only problem is that most often the food is second rate. However with quality all inclusive resorts like Beaches, the food will always equal to or better then a medium priced restaurant in the states. Additionally, most of the resorts have at least one restaurant offering outstanding white glove service and gourmet food.
A typical meal at a specialty restaurant at Beaches includes: appetizer, soup, salad, entrée and dessert, as well as all the beverages you can drink. Here in New England, that meal at a comparable restaurant would run $50-$70/person + another $18 or so for drinks. Let’s be conservative and say $80/person for dinner, another $40 for Breakfast, Lunch, & snacks, plus $20 for drinks during the day and evening.
Wow, that comes to $140/person/day. Seems like something might be off here, if we only paid $130/night. That doesn’t even take into account the all you can eat/drink factor.
By the way if you are thinking that going off resort to get meals cheaper is a good idea, better plan on packing your walking shoes, because you won’t find it cheaper in the resort towns, unless you are willing to sacrifice quality.
Are all inclusive family vacations overpriced? We’ll let you be the judge.
