In an age where the elderly will become the biggest age group in the world, there is no escaping the fact that it is going to be tough for the rest of the population to look after them. Resources will be stretched as they demand more care than has ever been demanded of the health care system.
Luckily though, the world has an ace up its sleeve in the shape of new technologies. Here are 5 ways in which technology will help:
Social Concerns
A major problem for the elderly is staying active and staying social as their bodies make it harder to do so. Social media outlets are the perfect remedy and one that will be universally available for free for ever more. Computers and software, including social networking websites are get ever easier to use and more mobile which means that it won’t be too difficult for the older generation to get to grips with them as they probably would be have been for the current generation.
Families and friends can easily stay in touch with house bound older people, while they will also have an easy way of speaking to people from all over the world and to discuss any problems they might have.
Health Concerns
Technology is helping to make communication between GPs and patients ever easier, which is especially important for older patients as they tend to have more health issues. Plus if they have any nutritional issues or need to remember to take a range of medication, simple handheld data delivery systems make all the right notifications when they need to be made to remind and instruct what should be taken when.
Emergency Care
A similar system is also perfect for elderly people who may need emergency care. Those living at home without 24 hour care will greatly benefit from advanced technology systems that monitor their health remotely so that should there be an issue the appropriate services are notified in time.
Medical Advances
Of course one of the biggest things new technology is helping to do is to speed up the advancements of new and existing drugs and treatments that remedy or cure common ailments for the elderly. There are breakthroughs in treatments for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s for example on a regular basis, often directly in relation to new technologies that have made testing and research easier.
In addition these technological advances have made NHS nursing jobs and particularly care assistant jobs far easier with technology providing reliable regulation of treatment and wellbeing.
There’s going to be a lot more elderly people in the country before we know it so it’s a good thing that technology is waiting in the wings to bail us out.
