Up Close And In Focus: The HTC Desire
By: Simon Drew

Android smart phones tend to come in a basic form. In fact, it can be said that most smart phones (regardless of operating system) comes in a set pattern that few mobile phone manufacturers get away from. The HTC Desire stands out so well not because it is completely new, but because it sets a new standard within the already established form factor.

We all know the basics of smart phones; it has a touch screen display, a built in camera, support for various networks, internal memory, WiFi and of course an operating system. The Desire has those, and exactly just those. But it is how the handset fulfills each factor that makes it truly one of a kind.

Before anything else, the HTC Desire is a smart phone. So above the usual call and text capabilities, the device is outfitted with several important other features that cover various functionalities that user needs such as web connectivity, media playback and of course, customizability.

With the Android operating system, this is all possible. Google has developed excellent technology that handles various user needs and more. It is an open source mobile platform which encourages developers to create more tools that provide a wider range of functionality that is unmatched by other devices limited by closed source codes.

Also, it does not hurt that Google is one of the largest providers of various web services. Features such as voice guided satellite navigation, optical search, mail and more are all present in the Android OS.

Using Google’s phone system is made even easier thanks to the use of the HTC Sense user interface. Anyone who had already used an HTC handset would be somewhat familiar with the touch based layout and the easy to use navigation controls. Thanks to the Sense, moving around the Android OS has become easier and more intuitive.

There is no such thing as the perfect spec sheet –after all, newer parts and technologies are being developed almost every single month. But having a great balance of hardware is something that is hard to match. In fact, very few phones are able to achieve that great combination and that is why phones such as the HTC Desire truly stand out.

The processor, as one would expect of a high end smart phone, is a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. This provides speed and power for handling even the most demanding applications (which are usually games). In terms of power consumption, the high speed Snapdragon does not sacrifice battery life –which gives this CPU the edge even when compared with newer and faster processors.

Of course, what matters to most people is not the power of the mobile phone’s insides, but what they can see and touch on the outside.

In this regard, the HTC Desire is truly a well balanced phone; the device packs a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while the 5 mega pixel camera brings together autofocus and LED flash. It even supports 720p HD video recording -more than enough to impress most smart phone owners.
