Do You Want A Personal GPS Locator?
By: John Taylor

A personal GPS locator is a handy little unit taking advantage of assisted GPS technology for helping to determine its own location as precise and reliable as possible. The location information is normally triggered by requests from the internet or from cell phones.

If you're making the request from the internet, you need to go to a certain URL that the GPS locator vendor gives you and log in. Then you will have to follow the instructions with normally is nothing more that pushing a button or make a click on your mouse and the real time location of you and your GPS locator unit will be displayed on a map. You will be able to see your neighborhood on this map and zoom it in and out and also scroll it in the directions you want.

Using the cell phone alternative all you have to do is sending a text-message to a number that your personal GPS locator's vendor gives you will get the same as described above displayed on your cell phone window.

Define Your Safety Zones

A safety zone is another function enabled in some GPS locator models. This is a customized virtual boundary around a location and some models allow you to create several such zones that can be active simultaneously. For models that have this function, you can opt in to receive alerts via email or text messages when you enter or leave any of your self-defined safety zones.

Tracking Intervals

You can set the tracking intervals on your on most GPS locators. The more expensive the model is the shorter tracking intervals you can set, for example every minute, every 5 minutes etc.

Location History

You can also get a location history. How detailed this is depends on the GPS locator model have. What it will give you is a view of where your GPS locator has traveled for the past hour, day or week. Some models will display this information on a map that you are able to zoom in and out or scroll in any direction, like the real-time map we described above.

Low Battery Alerts

Some models of personal GPS locators can notify you via email or text message when your device has been powered off or has a low battery for example 25 percent capacity left..

Be aware that personal GPS locators are prohibited to use on airplanes, just like cell phones and other electronic communication devices.
