How to Overcome Jealousy

Jealousy is notattractive and yet is it's a very common problem. Even happy relationships can be marred by jealousy. Jealous can happen in good or unhealthy relationships equally.

Jealousy begins when obsessive fear of losing the other person sets in. Destructive worry regarding losing one’s partner to a different person is very damaging. Even when no proof exists to warrant jealousy, some individuals can still feel jealous.

Jealousy is a phobia primarily based on losing someone to another person. Phobias are irrational fears that often have no recognizable cause.
Irrational fear can become so overwhelming the person starts to worryabout the fear. An irrational fear can become obsessive.

Jealous people try to avoid feelings of jealousy. Sadly, this usually means trying to control one’s partner. Control is bad for relationships and creates bad feelings and stress. When the relationship is stressed, the jealous feelings increase.

Ironically, attempting to control one’s partner increases jealous feelings instead of managing them.

Jealousy can be ended permanently.

Admitting you've got a problem is the primary step toward recovery from jealousy. Jealous individuals often deny the problem is their own. They often blame the partner, not themselves.

Believing that one’s partner caused jealous behavior with certain actions is simply an excuse.

Everyone is inconsiderate once in awhile. Inconsiderate behavior is common in the world. Jealous feelings are your own and you have to admit that to recover.

Partners can be genuinely inconsiderate. The point is, you are the one with the jealous feelings. No one can make another person jealous.
No matter what triggered your jealousy, it's still your problem. You can’t cure jealousy if you are blaming somebody else. Once you realize you are the person with the jealousy issue, you'll be able to begin to understand your problem.

Jealousy is created by fear.

Beneath all jealous feelings is a lot of anger. Underneath the anger is fear of loss or of looking foolish.

Protection is the real reason for fear. Problems begin when legitimate fear and false fear become confused. A legitimate fear can be recognized as one that protects you from actual danger.

Fear of an armed person on a dark street is a legitimate fear. Taking steps to protect yourself in response to a legitimate fear is healthy.

If you phone the police every time you see anybody on THAT dark street, that's different. You call even if you see a little old lady walking her dog. A person can not be too safe!

Your first fear was legitimate. A legitimate fear keeps you safer. Obviously the second fear is dysfunctional. Reacting to dysfunctional fear makes things worse.

A dysfunctional fear is called a phobia. Phobias can take over a life quickly. When you fear the fear itself, the phobia has become an obsession.

You can take your life back, however.
