Which God Songs Do You Prefer?
By: Nicholas Lewis

Can contemporary Christian music provide a worship experience as fulfilling as traditional hymns? I believe it can. For me I love both traditional hymns and the new Christian God songs equally. This is an area where many pastors may be missing out on an opportunity to further unite Christians.

The first question some may ask, does modern Christian music have a place in worship? The newer churches tend to feature this type of music regularly It is unfortunate though that more traditional churches do not generally feature the newer God songs. Does contemporary Christian music have a place in worship? That depends does it lift up and glorify God?

It is my opinion that newer Christian music such as “Awesome God” does indeed have a place in worship services. The problem I feel stems from the resistance to change. People get stuck in tradition. They do not take a minute to realize that worship service has changed a great deal in the last 2000 years.

As with most problems there is more than one side. The old standard hymns are far from standard at todays mega churches. Motivated by a fear of losing the young crowd these modern churches often refrain from the old God songs. It is great to bring the youth to god. Should the older crowd be completely ignored though? I've got a feeling that adding some traditional God songs will not chase the younger crowd away.

I am just presenting the opinion of a parishioner that has worshiped at many churches of varying denominations. I am afraid that there is a barrier being created between Christians that unfortunately eliminates interactions. These interactions should prove rewarding for both sides. God songs should be used to unite Christians, not cause a divide. This problem can be fixed quite easily. Just use God songs new and old in worship service.

I feel the perfect mix of new and old God songs provides the ideal worship experience. Want to increase the roles on Sunday morning? Try mixing up the hymns a bit. In the church that I normally attend there is an amazing mixture of people. I mean it is normal to see a woman with a Mohawk singing and praising right next to a gentleman in a very nice suit. This to me is wonderful.

I think it boils down to a generational gap. Historically there has always been resistance to the next generation of music, be it God songs or pop song for that matter. Which type of Christian music do you prefer? Who's to say that you can't like both? If you do not feel that the newer Christian music is acceptable I think you might be missing out. The Christian music that is produced these days is great. There are artists in just about every genre.
