More than 22% of the world population is following one book in almost all matters of their religious and social life – and that book is The Quran? Let us tell you a bit about this book in detail, and why so many people are following it incessantly.
The Quran is a book that displays the exact words revealed by Allah Almighty through the angel Gabriel upon his last Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) 1400 years ago. Since then, it has been the complete code of life for Muslims to follow in order to live a successful and blessed life in this world and hereafter. It talks about the oneness of God and His superior sovereignty of the entire universe.
The Quran is the principal source of every Muslim’s faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects that concern us human beings, whether personal, professional or social. Its basic theme however, remains the relationship between mankind and the supreme creator.
Quran consists of a wealth of information. It narrates stories of the past as well as the later generations, it tells the creation of everything from the entire universe to a new born child, it talks about the formation of the heavens and earth, it distinguishes between halaal and haraam, and it marks the line between the believers and non-believers. In short, the Quran provides complete guidance that humanity needs. Without the guidance of the Quran, humanity would still be living in the darkness of ignorance. As Allah says in The Quran: “And We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims)”
Some Facts about the Quran:
• It is the eternal Holy book, and not one word of it has been altered over the fourteen centuries of its existence.
• The Prophet received the first revelation in 610CE in the city of Makkah, and was revealed little by little throughout a period of about 23 years.
• Quran is divided into thirty equal divisions, which are called juz in Arabic.
• There are 114 surahs (chapters) in the Quran.
• The longest chapter is Al-Baqarah consisting of 286 verses and the shortest chapter is Al-Kausar consisting of three verses only.
• The whole Quran has 6,236 verses.
• Chapters in the Quran can be divided into two parts. The chapters revealed before the migration of the Prophet to Madina are called Makkan, and those sent down after are called Madinan.
• Makkan chapters are composed of short meaningful sentences, mainly focusing on the oneness of Allah and prohibiting from idol-ship. They explain the rewards for believers and the punishments for the non-believers. Events of the past prophets are also related for humanity to take lessons from.
• Conversely, the Madinan chapters are lengthy. They explain in detail about the basic facets of the religion Islam, including the five pillars namely Praying, Zakat, Namaz, Fasting, and Hajj. This part enlightens mankind about the moral and ethical codes, social, laws and guidelines (social, economical and political), and also explains the system of war and how to handle the captives. It is this part where Allah reveals Muhammad to be the last prophet and Quran to be the last Holy Book till Qayyamah.
Quran is no doubt the last Divine Book which was revealed, so all the past revealed books have been discussed in the Quran. We can say it contains everything that was present in the previous revealed books and much more.
