Men might not bring up their looks in conversation, but a lot more of them are doing something about it regardless of the economic woes they've been facing the past few years. In 2009, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons or (BAAPS) says UK cosmetic surgeons performed 581 male breast reductions, or gynaecomastia procedures, which is an increase of 80% and the third most common surgical procedure for men.
Male breasts, moobs, or man-boobs are caused by numerous factors including age, heredity, obesity, dieting, drugs, and even medical condition. Regardless of why they formed, however, they are difficult to get rid of and even surgery leaves patients with two options.
Liposuction is one solution cosmetic surgery clinics have to get rid of man-boobs. During this procedure, cosmetic surgeons use special tools to suck the fatty tissue out from underneath the patient's breast tissue. This allows the skin to lay flat along the chest in a normal position. This procedure only requires a small incision, so there is very little scarring.
When liposuction isn't a suitable option, plastic surgeons can choose to eliminate moobs through a single incision along the nipple or base of the breast. Both options are performed as an outpatient and require a special compression garment for the first portion of the recovery period. Those who have undergone these procedures report some pain, swelling, aching, and bruising during the first few weeks of recovery. However, this is easily managed with the help of pain medication and it disappears fairly quickly.
More UK Men and Women Underwent Plastic Surgery in 2009
Britons were to have more than just gynaecomastia procedures throughout 2009. The top five cosmetic surgeries for men include rhinoplasty (nose jobs) in first place, followed by eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in second, gynaecomastia was third, ear correction placed fourth (otoplasty), and liposuction in fifth. For women, the top five were breast augmentation such as breast implants and enlargements, eyelid surgery, and breast reduction in third, followed by face / neck lifts in fourth and tummy tucks in fifth.
In all, UK cosmetic surgeons performed 36,482 surgeries in 2009 for an increase of 6.7% over 2008 numbers. Not all procedures increased, however. Facelifts for women decreased by approximately 8% in 2009 while the number of brow lifts, eyelid surgery, and nose jobs increased by 43%, 6%, and 25% respectively. Plastic surgeons believe the reason for this is that patients are seeking cheaper solutions and only having the main portions repaired.
