Horse races are indeed a visual treat for any horse racing fan. But a lot of hard work and team effort goes into preparing a horse for the race. Regular horse racing exercises ensure that the horses stay fit and fine.
Horse racing exercises may differ from horse to horse and depend on a lot of other factors as well. In the initial stages, you can start exercising your horse by jogging it 2 miles for a few days. Then gradually, as the horse gets into the habit of routine exercise, you can advance to slow gallop a mile.
At all times, take care to proceed slowly and make sure that the horse is comfortable with the pace and the distance. You can gallop it for a few days, and then change to a jog for a day. Keep switiching this way, so that the horse doesn’t burn out. Continue this regime for a month or two.
Once it is better conditioned, you can start breezing it a furlong on a weekly basis. Stick to a furlong for a few weeks, and then steadily over a period of 3 months, increase the furlong up to six furlongs.
By the end of three months of training, when your horse gains consistency and does not wear out after breezes of 6 furlongs; he is ready to compete in a race. However, pick a race that is suitable according to his built and stamina.
There is a wide variety of horse racing exercises used to train horses of different breeds. Some very common ones include hind leg exercises, ground exercises, flatwork exercises, lateral flatwork exercises, extensions and collections, spiral circles, leg yielding, rein back, barrel horse exercises and the rocking horse exercise. There are several exercises that can also be done with the help of obstacles. Pole bending, cones as well as jumps are just a few of them.
Be patient and work your way through step-by-step. After the exercise, always check the horses’ legs for any signs of heat or swelling. You could also use ice to avoid any swelling. Always remember to walk the horse for at least an hour after every exercise.
