Stay Safe While Living Alone
By: Bruce Strong

If you are moving in to your first place or you tenth place, and you live solo, there are ways to ensure that you maintain a high level of personal safety wherever you go. Many people are nervous about living alone and don’t know the many steps that can bring a sense of peace and security to their lives. Here are some tips to help you increase your safety even if you live on your own.

The first thought that may come to your mind when you think about personal safety and how to stay safe is that you should learn self defense. While a self defense course is the most effective way to learn to fight off an attacker, it is not the only way to protect yourself at home and in public.

The main aspect of self defense is to be aware of your surroundings as much as possible. This is just as important to do at home as it is to do in a parking lot or on the street. When you know your surroundings, you are less likely to become a target. This begins as soon as you choose a new place to live.

If you are moving to a new area, do your research. Drive the neighborhood, not just the street you live on. What is the environment like within a mile or two from your home? Also, do research on the internet by searching crime statistics for that area. Performing some research will help you to choose a residence that is located in as safe an area as possible.

At home, self defense comes in the form of preparedness. Lighting is a huge factor that can deter a criminal. If your house is not well lit outside, criminals can hide in the shadows. Motion detector lights are available at reasonable prices and are fairly easy to install. This type of lighting is excellent for self defense at home.

After you have settled in to a home, it is easy to become comfortable to the point of being unaware. Regardless of whether you have lived in your home for one month or for 10 years, it is still necessary for you to look around as you drive into the driveway or garage. It is necessary to remember to lock doors as soon as you enter or leave your home. Will criminals typically simply walk in? No. However, this is something that has occurred and therefore it gives you reason to just lock up. Better safe than sorry.

To learn self defense is more than to learn how to kick or strike an assailant. To live alone comfortably, yes, you should learn self defense techniques. However, you should also employ other personal safety tools like lighting and proper locks on doors and windows. Living alone offers independence and necessary solitude. Fear should not be a part of the pie of living alone. Through learning about how to increase personal safety, you can live alone happily without fear.
