Dan Marino was a great NFL player. Dan Marino's record-breaking legacy begins as he completes 362 of 564 passes for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, setting NFL records for completions, yards and TD's in a season. In the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins whipped the Seattle Seahawks, then thy go on to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, with Dan throwing for nearly 430 yards and four touchdown passes. They did lose in the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers in a hard fought game for the Miami Dolphins. Marino was selected for the Pro Bowl that year. Marino's 48 touchdown passes broke the previous record of 36, which was held by both George Blanda for the Houston Oilers in 1961.

All of the big time colleges and universities came out to recruit Marino when he was a senior in high school. The Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball drafted him. Ultimately he chooses to stay near home and attend the University of Pittsburgh.
For the Pittsburgh Panthers, Dan foreshadows his NFL achievements by setting NCAA season and career records for attempts and completions, yardage, and touchdowns. He earns All-American honors his junior year. After his senior season, Dan's jersey number is retired by the university in 1982.
