Got a couple of week's vacation coming, and planning to finally add-on that garage you've always wanted. Well, building materials have probably gotten a lot more expensive that the last time you checked, and most things associated with garage construction costs will now cost you more.
Here are some tips that may help you to keep your garage construction cost down to levels that are affordable, although they are not cheap. With a little planning, you will find that you can save a great deal of money as you add on the garage.
So, you may be planning to start that new garage in September. If that is your goal, then start shopping in April. The earlier you do your beginning shopping the better decisions you will make. Being sure that you have enough time to look into all options concerning supplies, will be a great money saver.
Consider using utility grade materials for the garage. In particular studs will save you money here. Lumber yards often reduce the price on studs that may not be the prettiest in the yard. Plywood is often available with blows (areas where the ply may not have been completely glued together) which costs much less. When nailed into place, the plywood becomes just as strong as the more expensive plywood. Studs will be covered, so who cares if they are not pretty.
Last and certainly not least, take the time to shop around. Since you will have started shopping well in advance, you will plenty of time to pick and choose. If it seems expensive, wait a week or two. With the economy in the toilet these days, there is always something on sale at one of the big home improvement stores. Make sure to look in the Sunday newspaper inserts for the latest specials and sales being advertised.
Proper preparation can save thousands of dollars on construction costs. Find a nice flat area to store your stockpile now.
