Training Your Lhasa Apso To Be Your Best Friend
By: Camille Goldin

There are few joys in life as great as having a well behaved Lhasa Apso. A good dog will give you its unconditional love and devotion. While friendship itself must be earned, a strong bond can be created in the course of your Lhasa Apso training.

During your Lhasa Apso training it’s good to remember how important rewards are. When your dog successfully completes a training exercise, praise him verbally and with an edible treat.

It’s also important to be patient with your dog. It can take a little while for the communication to be worked out. It’s a matter of your dog not speaking human and you not speaking dog!

What kinds of things does your dog need to learn? For starters, teach him to come when called. Begin by choosing the command word that you want to use. Many people use the word “Come”. It has a hard, distinct sound that should be easy for your dog to hear.

It’s important to use the correct tone of voice for this and all other commands. Use a calm, assured tone. You have to sound like you’re confident that the dog will respond to your voice. If you’re not confident, why should the dog listen to you?

What to do if the dog won’t come? Try putting a long leash on the dog’s collar. If the dog doesn’t come when called, give the leash a little tug. The idea isn’t to drag the dog to you. It’s more a matter of getting your Lhasas attention. When it does come, give praise and a treat.

Another fun trick to include in your Lhasa Apso training is how to find someone. Suppose that you have a child in your home. You command your dog to “Find Timmy”. Meanwhile, Timmy begins calling the dog. Timmy gives the dog a treat when the dog finds him. Eventually you’ll want the dog to find the child without the child calling him. This can be an invaluable trick should the child become lost.

Another great command to teach your Lhasa Apso is to enter a room or crate on command. This is easiest done if you keep a crate set up in your home.

Begin by sitting next to the crate and placing a treat inside it. Then give the command word to enter the crate. Many people use the word “Kennel”. After your Lhasa Apso enters the crate, praise it and tell it what a good dog it is.

Leave the door of the crate open. The dog needs to see the crate as a welcoming, secure place. It shouldn’t be used as a place of punishment. By doing this repeatedly, the dog will learn to enter the crate.

Lhasa Apso training, like any dog training, takes consistency. Frequent short training sessions get the best results. The bonds that training creates can make your Lhasa Apso a friend for life.
