Help! We

People say that money is a number one cause of divorce. But “his dog” vs “her dog” can cause a lot of strife, as well. Chances are, the dogs have gotten along fine when visiting each other’s homes and while living in separate households, and you’ve had visions of “Rocky” and “Lilly” falling in love with each other right alongside you and your mate. So now you’ve said “I do” and, as the moving van is driving away, you look into each other’s eyes, excited about your future together, when you’re suddenly interrupted by the sounds of an all-out dog brawl in another part of the house.

“My dog never does that,” says the bride.

“Well it isn’t my dog,” says the groom. “Your dog is spoiled and does whatever he wants.”

Now the entire household is upset. You both love your dogs and have been committed to them for as long as you’ve had them, and you’ve come to believe that you’re pretty good at knowing how to train dogs. What you didn’t count on was that your two little angels would take such an immediate and intense dislike to each other when presented with the reality that they now have to SHARE their territory with each other.

So, who is the source of the problem? Which one is innocent, and which one should be reprimanded? Which one should go to training? There are actually a number of factors influencing the new dynamic, but the key to understanding is deciphering the current pack order. Who has been the pack leader? Who will be the pack leader now? How do you explain this to the dogs before someone is injured?

This is a confounding situation for many newlyweds, new roommates, and in today’s economy, with many adults opting to move back in with their parents for a while to get back on their feet financially. Since these problems didn’t exist before, everyone tends to be convinced that they know very well how to train their dog, and they are also probably equally convinced that their dog is not the problem.

The best way to deal with this situation is through dog training. In this circumstance especially, a dog training expert who COMES TO THE NEW HOME to perform the dog training classes can garner the absolute best results and, most likely, in a shorter period of time than training that takes place outside of the new home. A dog trainer who trains your dogs in their new, shared home will be able to assess the overall dynamics and understand where the conflict lies within the pack order. A professional dog trainer will be able to answer many of the questions that have you puzzled, including who the pack leader really is. You might be surprised at the results of the trainer’s findings!

A professional dog trainer can size up the obstacles that are preventing a smooth transition for you and your pets, but even more importantly, will teach you both how to train your dogs so you will be more consistent in leading your pack and eliminating mixed signals and disagreements.

When integrating your dogs into a new, shared territory threatens to become a problem, present a united front by learning how to train the dogs together. Establish a good rapport with your dog trainer during the initial training process, and arrange semi-regular home visits to monitor progress and maintenance, as well as any new problems that might try to arise. Congratulations on your new life together; may you and your dogs enjoy newly wedded bliss.
