There is a huge market for dog clothes. We have all seen pet stores that carry every type of accessory from coats to sunglasses for Puggle puppies and other breeds. Is this all for dog fashion or is there some necessity behind it all?
Puggle puppies and other small breeds usually have very short, thin hair when they are young. In order to keep warm, they use the body heat from their mother and littermates in order to survive. When they are taken away from their pack, they are usually old enough to maintain a healthy temperature. However, there are some situations that their short hair is just not enough to keep them warm.
Going outside to do their business in colder months can be one of these instances. Puggle puppies, Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terrier puppies and other breeds are too small to brave the wind and snow when outside for longer periods of times. Sweatshirts and coats are perfect to keep them warm when outside for walks or going to the bathroom. No one wants to be outside in just a light shirt and pants in the winter, and the same goes for your small dog.
You don’t have to buy an entire wardrobe for your puppy. Simply purchase a few sweatshirts that are both comfortable for your Puggle puppy as well as practical for the inclement weather. It is best to try on these items, if you can, before purchasing them to be sure they fit properly and your puppy will be comfortable wearing them. Some sweatshirts and a coat or two is all your pup will need to keep warm and maintain his body temperature in the colder weather.
Of course the hoodies and coats make sense for colder weather. But there are many other clothing items out there that may seem a little less practical, such as sunglasses and hats. In certain cases, these can be useful as well.
Puggle puppies and other breeds with light colored fur can easily become sun burnt when out in the sun for too long. Hats help to keep the sensitive areas of the body, such as the head and ears, protected from the harsh sun.
If you think hats and sunglasses are a bit too much, try applying some sun screen to your puppy’s head and ears. Do not apply too much or in places where your pup will be able to lick it off and get sick. A thin layer will protect the skin and allow you both to enjoy the day outside in the sun.
