Reading to your child is an incredibly important thing to do as a parent. You may think that it is not worth reading to them though before they appear to be at an age when they can understand, but it really is. As soon as your child has ears (normally happens pretty early) then they can start to learn how to interpret sounds. This is the same principle behind why people play music to babies in the womb, though this must sound quite strange to the foetuses as they have water in their ears.
So what should you be reading your very little people? Here are 5 of the best books for kids up to a bout the age of 4.
The Snail and the Whale – Elfrida Vipont and Raymond Briggs
This is a charming tale of a snail who wants to see the world and the whale who takes him on an epic journey. They see icebergs and volcanoes, penguins and sharks and despite the fact the snail is almost overwhelmed by the vastness of it all, when the whale gets into trouble, it is the snail that saves the day.
It is a perfect children’s book for bedtime that young kids will enjoy for its beautiful pictures as much as its charming tale.
Goodnight Moon – Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd
Goodnight Moon is the perfect bedtime book. One of the best ways to put a child to sleep is to read them a story about going to sleep.
This story follows the mind of a tiny rabbit as it wishes ‘goodnight’ to everything he can and can’t see. He says goodnight to his socks, and to the clocks and everything else in a wonderful sleepy poetic rhythm that is a sweet lullaby to make tiny eyes close gently.
Not Now, Bernard – David McKee
When it comes to books for children this is a classic and features a small boy whose parents are too busy to notice that there is a monster in the garden. No matter how hard he tries to tell his parents they repeatedly say: ‘Not now, Bernard.’ This is one of many great childrens books; especially as small children can relate to the plight of the boy who is always pestering his parents with what he feels is an important issue. And he would be right too as the monster eventually eats him.
What all these books have in common are fantastic pictures. Children of this age will love the bright and fun images that will excite and enthral them.
