How To Read Your Child A Story
By: Sam Qam

One of the worst things any parent can do is not introduce their child to reading. Reading is incredibly important and the early you start reading to your child the better, as without it they will be further behind in school and less mentally developed.
But what if you don’t really know how to read your child a story? Here is a quick guide to help you do it right.

Get the Timing Right

You have to make reading a story part of the bedtime routine. This is mutually beneficial for both you and your child. For them, they get to hear a nice story while they are wrapped up in bed with one of their parents, making them feel cosy and safe in their bedroom. For you, it gives them a motivation for getting into bed and if you read the right kind of story at the right time they can drift right off to sleep without any fuss, while also developing their intellect at the same time.

Pick the Right Book

Getting the book just right is really important too. Depending how old your child is it is best to avoid long books because if they are a good enough story, they will be too excited and will beg you to keep reading. A nice short story that you can read in less than 15 minutes is perfect as you can come to a natural conclusion leaving no questions to be answered. It is also a good idea to get a book that is in some way about going to sleep or about dreaming, as this gets the idea into your child’s head and aids in the drifting off process.

Set the Atmosphere

There is no point reading a story in the living room with the television on and the lights on etc. as they will never concentrate on the story and will never go to sleep. Especially as you will then need to either carry them to bed or get them to wake up again and walk themselves. It is best to read to them when they are fully wrapped up in bed and with just enough light for you to be able to read without straining your eyes. A little light music is also a good idea as it helps to get them in the dreamy story zone.

Get all these things right and some good books for children and you should have a little one full of brain developing story and sleeping in no time at all. There plenty of quality cheap books online to be found.
