The Wonder Medicine BOTOX
By: Jamie Hanson

In late 1980s, Food and medicine Administration of the United States of America (FDA), acknowledged the use of BOTOX, hitherto known as a poisonous toxin, in the field of medical treatment. Botulinum Toxin, patented under the trade names of BOTOX and BOTOX Cosmetic, since 2002, have been officially prescribed for treating several muscular disorders in the human body.

BOTOX is used for many serious ailments such as the cervical dystonia and BOTOX Cosmetic is used for facial muscle disorders such as frown lines between eyebrows or wrinkles. While the introduction of this medicine in the field of medical science raised many unanswered questions regarding the long-term impact of the medicine, but many, many patients affected with muscle-related disorders embraced the idea of an alternative mode of treatment to traditional cosmetic surgery.

The Miraculous Impact of the Lethal Toxin

Botulinum Toxin had been an age-old toxin causing very harmful physical impairments like paralysis, but it was discovered that when administered in carefully-controlled, small doses, it could actually reverse the working process of a malfunctioning muscle and restore normal functioning for a temporary period. This discovery indicated two possible outcome of a BOTOX-induced treatment.

- The affected body muscle may be numbed or weakened by a small dose of this injected medicine but the positive impact won't remain for long.

- Once the effect of this medicine is over, the patient will have to take continued treatment every four to six months to ensure normal functioning of affected muscle or muscles.

- The side effects are many and so adequate precautions must be taken to prevent secondary organ failure caused by such a treatment procedure, if continued over a long period of time.

The scary prospect of having to use this type medicine for continued, long-range treatment and its associated negative impact has forced the general public to demand more accurate information on this medicine.

Clinical Trials on BOTOX

What may be pertinent to ask FDA is to what extent clinical trials have been performed on this medicine before releasing it into the market. The clinical trials history provides a track record of known symptoms and probable symptoms to explore in future for safe administration of this medicine. Very often, the clinical trials are not comprehensive enough to predict future harmful impact of a medicine containing poisonous toxins!

It is also pertinent to ask whether clinical trials data are ever released with the medical literature associated with any particular medicine, if the medicine happens to contain dangerous ingredients. Published results of such trials may not be adequate for the medical community to make a good assessment of this medicine.

BOTOX and BOTOX Cosmetic are currently being used to treat muscle-related disorders in the human body and the workings of this wonder medicine leave a temporary healing effect, which means they must be continued over a long period of time for the treatment to be effective. On the other hand, full information on the negative impact of using such medicines for long periods of time may not be still known.
