By: Sam Qam

There are many reasons why a person might require an occupational therapist. Despite the misleading name, occupational therapy does not always refer to therapy conducted within the workplace. In many cases this kind of therapy takes place in the home and covers a greater area of care than you might anticipate.

Occupational therapists use a variety of methods dependant on the client in order to help them to develop, or recover in a variety of aspects in their work or home life. Very often this kind of therapy is required after a serious accident or as is often the case with mental or physical handicaps.

This should not be confused with physiotherapy as this deals not with improving a person's abilities but with assisting them in coping with their limitations in a living or working environment. They often also assist people who have had their ability to work impaired to find a job that can be suited to their requirements.

Mental difficulties are a common area in which occupational therapy can be a great help. Following an accident a person can often suffer from poor short term memory, or difficulty in performing simple tasks whether due to trauma or motor functions. Therapists work with these people using a variety of methods and techniques which can assist them in recovering their abilities. Memory tests and list making can not only help deal with the difficulties initially but can assist in recovery itself. Repetition of simple tasks can also help with motor skills and dexterity.

For many however this is not the case as they struggle with more permanent handicaps such as spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy. For these people tasks that are taken for granted by others such as getting dresses can become a far more difficult procedure. An occupational therapist can help them with methods of managing these tasks as well as assisting with the emotional trials of the transition.

A Locum occupational therapist will often deal within specific age groups such as the elderly or very often young children. By working within classes they can often assess children with potential learning difficulties and arrange a program to suit their needs. For this and other healthcare jobs like physiotherapy locum can provide employment in a variety of areas.

Through various methods of therapy a occupational therapist can assist a person in living and working within their limits.

Sam Qam knows a locum occupational therapist can make a big difference to someone's life in addition to the physiotherapy locum offers.
