The Chelsea District
By: Chad DeBolt

The Chelsea District in New York City is perhaps one of the most significant areas when pertaining to art. Chelsea is a neighborhood that is located on the West Side of Manhattan. As many as 350 art galleries call Chelsea home today. It has been this way since the mid-1990's when many artists packed up and made the trek from the SoHo district. From 16th to 27th Streets and between 10th and 11th avenues is where you can find these galleries now. Respected artists as well as some new upcomers display their work to the public. As you take a stroll through Chelsea, you should stop in some of the art galleries there such as the Skylight Gallery or the ATM Gallery. If you like those, there are hundreds more.

In the heart of Chelsea lies the Chelsea Art Museum. It is a 30,000 square foot building that has been renovated to include more room for artists. Though not a gallery, the Chelsea Art Museum holds a lot of contemporarty artwork. Exhibits in the museum focus solely on "the contemporary human understanding across a broad range of cultural, social, environmental and geographical perspectives." The Chelsea Museum also includes works by artists that shed some light on previously unknown parts of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Chelsea Art Museum likes to obtain art based on their mission, and their exhibits are composed of a thematic nature. Some of the inspiration behind this art is social, current, political, and cultural events. Although the art within the walls of the Chelsea Museum can change on a regular basis, they also house a rather impressive permanent collection. It consists of at least 500 different works from all kinds of different branches of the art world. There are sculptures, paintings, and even works on paper. Artists such as Pol Bury, Mimmo Rotella, and J.P. Riopelle are featured in this collection. By coming to tour the Chelsea Art Museum, you are given a catalog to aid you throughout your viewing. This can be extremely helpful because it can provide you with artist information as well as information on the piece of art. But that's not all the Chelsea offers. Occasionally, the public is given the chance to view films and other performances, and there is also the chance of being able to talk with some of the artists.

The Chelsea Museum is also home to the Miotte Foundation. This is a foundation that is dedicated to preserving the works of Jean Miotte. His works are considered as part of the legacy that is New York. The foundation also helps to collect money for new scholarships and research on L'Informel. Different selections of Miotte's work are rotated about the museum on a regular basis. Miotte has maintained a studio in SoHo since the late seventies.
