Australian Beach-Goer Saves Life Of Kangaroo
By: Tim Greyton

On Australia's Gold Coast a strange but valiant life saving event took place where a passer by pulled a drowning kangaroo from the water.

Local surfer and all round extreme sports athlete Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It was swimming very poorly and kept getting swept under the waves. When he moved a little closer he realised that the struggling animal was a kangaroo, something that very rarely even enters the water. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of larger surfboards out he went to see if he could help the poor creature.

When he got to the Kangaroo it was very tired. It had been fighting against the waves and the current for quite some time and didn’t have much energy left. An attempt was made by Neil to bring the kangaroo on the board with him but it kept struggling and ended up falling back off again. A number of people paddling kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Seeing that his method wasn't working, Neil decided to instead drag the kangaroo back along side his surfboard. Although a little worse for ware, both Neil and the roo made it back onto solid ground.

The kangaroo has been named Ian (after the great Ian Thorpe) and experts are still baffled as to why he tried to swim in the sea. “Kanagroos are pretty poor swimmers” says Tim Michaels of the Queensland Nature Reserve. They normally stick to land where they can move pretty well he continued, but obviously this one fancied a bit of a dip.

Ian the kangaroo has made a full recovery and is being looked after in a nearby shelter. When he keepers are happy they will release him into the wild and hopefully he has learnt his lesson about water. As for Neil, he remains modest about the whole thing and says that he was just helping out another of God’s creatures.
