All About Pyridine
By: Pradeep

Pyridine is a toxic colorless flammable liquid organic base with a disagreeable odor usually derived from coal, a simple heterocyclic aromatic organic compound structurally related to benzene. Pyridine is used in the oxidation step of oligonucleotide synthesis.
Pyridine is a simple aromatic heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C5H5N. An estimated 26,000 tons of pyridine compounds were produced worldwide in 1989

Preparation:

Pyridine was originally industrial produced by extraction from coal tar.
It is currently synthesized from formaldehyde, ammonia, and acetaldehyde

The Basic Formula of Pyridine Preparation:

CH2O + NH3 + 2 CH3CHO → C5H5N + 3 H2O + H2

Pyridine occurs in numerous plants. There is no definite evidence of its presence in belladonna leaves, but its presence was identified in the roots of the same plant.

Applications:

Pyridine is used as solvent, reagent in organic synthesis. Pyridine is a widely used polar but aprotic solvent. It can be easily mixed with a broad range of solvents including hexane and water. Pyridine is the precursor to myriad insecticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, food flavorings, dyes, rubber chemicals, adhesives, paints, explosives and disinfectants. Pyridine has a great role in analytical chemistry.
