Earlier, headphones used to provide its user with the ability to listen to quality music without disturbing (or getting disturbed by) the people surrounding him. These headphones created a new innovation in the music industry which offered the feature of breaking up from the monotony of office and home or for commuting large distances with private music. But they used to fail at providing good quality while the commuter is traveling through a rowdy bus or train, a noisy airbus or while sitting alongside a humming refrigerator. These cons were canceled with the introduction of ANC (Active Noise Cancellation).
This feature was installed in headsets for major airliners and even for helicopter pilots so that they can listen to music or commands without any outside interruption. But, this used to increase the wiring and bulk of the headsets. Also, this feature required batteries which needed to be recharged or replaced from time to time. Also, the complicated wiring used to result in unwanted high frequency hisses coming from the headsets. The introduction of earphones made them more famous while a user is thinking of portability and good hearing. But headphones were still considered when noise cancellation (however the quality) was desired.
But now, major earphone manufacturers have started noise canceling earphones which provide good quality music with soundproofing and noise cancellation features. There are two types of noise canceling earphones available: in the ear and around the ear but they come with their pros, cons and prices. The in the ear earphones are averagely priced and provide better quality music than what is provide by most of the mp3 players earphones available.
Having the noise cancellation features make it helpful to safely listen to the music without feeling the need to increase the volume, even while the user is sitting in a noisy airliner or a rowdy bus. These allow no sound leakage which adds the benefit of listening to personal music without having to disturb (or be disturbed) by the nearby people. The higher priced models provide many times the same qualities but can include extra ear-pieces in case the originals are lost and also come in different sizes which ensure better fitting. The drawbacks of these noise canceling earphones are that sometimes the user has to get used to their quality. Also, if the earpieces get lost or fall off, then the whole device becomes useless. But, the higher priced come with replacement guarantee or additional buds.
The on the ear noise cancellation earphones are for the users who are very serious regarding the quality they desire from their music. They are certainly more costly than the in-ear earphones but provide that much better quality and noise cancellation. Many on the ear earphones do not require noise cancellation feature as the placement of the ear buds around the ears do not allow any sound to seep through or any unwanted noise disturbance. The noise cancellation featured earphones work by copying the sound of silence. This makes an impression in the brain that the user is only hearing the music and nothing else.
