Would you use pop-ups and other promotional techniques that many people claim are "annoying"? You might be interested to learn that paying customers don't seem to be offended by these tactics.
While pop-up blocking technology has created a smoother surfing experience for Internet users everywhere, there are still numerous software applications that allow marketers to use pop-up like tactics that cannot be blocked. Such innovations have created millions of dollars in revenue for businesses in every online niche.
I'm willing to bet everyone you know would raise their hand and tell you they hate pop-up ads of any kind. I don't believe I've ever heard a non-marketer mention pop-ups, slide-ins, hover pops, etc., in a positive light.
And yet it has been proven time and again that such applications can literally double, triple, and even quadruple the sales a Website makes in any given period of time!
When I see stats like this I'm often reminded of how, whenever a new Wal-Mart is scheduled for construction, it's extremely common for the local population to protest and petition against the event. Then once the retail center is completed and open for business sales flow in 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
There seems to be a distinct difference in what people say they don't like, and what they are honestly likely to respond to in a positive manner.
It really makes no difference how often or how loudly Internet users complain and whine about pop-ups and related technology. The joyous truth is people with credit cards seem to react in a very favorable manner to all of these tools when they are used correctly.
I'll take this a step further and say a lot of times the people who cry the loudest in protest against marketing and advertising of any kind are broke, if not outright poor. I don't know any highly successful people who are angry because they were presented with an exit offer by the site they were just reading, or because the clerk at the electronics store tried to sell them some extra batteries before they left.
And let's be ultra blunt. Why should you or I care in the least about the whinings of people who can't afford our services in the first place?
The bottom line is this: There is nothing (nothing!) wrong with using pop-ups or any other form of assertive promotion to sell your quality product or ethical service. In fact doing so is a pretty smart move that will likely put more money in your pockets and more happy customers in your database. About
