Last August, the National Labor Relations Board mandated every private business establishment in America to display a set of US Labor Department-approved labor law posters in their offices. This came after their efforts to reduce unfair labor practices in the workforce industry.
Worker protection is one of the main aspects of the federal labor law posters. Simply defined, worker protection renders services dedicated to the security and safety of every person, business and even government establishments across America. With these Labor Law Posters, the NLRB hopes to eradicate unfair labor practices that are common, especially in small business establishments. This covers issues like Minimum wage, Hours of work, Child Labor, Payment of wages and wage supplements, Industrial homework, Apparel industry registration, Registration of Professional Employer Organizations, Farm labor, and Employee Discrimination.
Each state has its own Labor Law Poster requirements. The NLRB has also made these posters bilingual for businesses that want to avail of that option (it is not required to have bilingual posters). The most important issue is that these posters have to be displayed in places that are highly conspicuous and visible to each employee. The objective is to set up these posters where employees can easily see them like the cafeteria, toilets, offices, or the work areas. The NLRB even requires off-site locations to have these posters and some posters are required to be posted in the employment office.
Each state has its own Labor Laws. Some states also change minimum wage annually. According to the Labor Law Compliance Center, the updates on Labor Laws happen so frequently but the posters would only have to be changed on upon notice by the NLRB itself. This needs not to happen every year. Changes will have to be amended by the state’s Federal and OSHA agencies.
The OSHA, or Occupational Safety and Health Administration, oversees the distribution of the Safety Posters. The Job Safety and Health Posters are an effort to maintain employers’ responsibility to have a safe and ergonomically sufficient work environment that will cause no danger for the employees. Establishments and companies found lacking are subject to OSHA inspection and sanctions.
Posting these Labor Law and Safety Posters will strengthen the responsibilities of employers and employees. With comprehension and understanding, the employees will have a better knowledge of their rights and this can cause an increase in efficiency in the business.
According to the Labor Law Compliance Center, “Keeping your employees in compliance with required regulations saves paying penalty fees, reminds supervisors of their obligations to uphold the law, and protect your workers from injury, discrimination, harassment, and other important State, Federal, and OSHA requirements. Also, in case of a cause of action, not having required posters can be used negatively against your company.”
