Requirements For Social Security Benefits
By: Nemelou Despuez

The Social Security benefit is the largest federally-assisted program that aims to provide financial help for elderly and disabled people.

Under SSA rules, a person should meet certain requirements that will make him qualified to receive federal assistance. This Social Security disability eligibility includes:

• A person should have a severe medical condition that prevents him from working. Usually, disability benefits are granted to people with debilitating disease and not to those who have only short-term or partial disability.
• There should be laboratory and test results that will prove the severity of the person’s condition.
• People with certain diseases or impairments are eligible to receive Social Security benefits. Meanwhile, the federal agency will decide if these conditions are serious enough and if these hinder someone from working.
• Claimants should have paid their Social Security taxes during their past employments.
• A claimant should have worked at least 10 years or have contributed enough Social Security funds.

In filing for Social Security claims, claimants are asked to provide the following relevant information :

• Social Security number
• Birth certificate / baptismal certificate
• The clinic or hospital’s address where the claimant has received treatment.
• Names, contact numbers, and addresses of doctors and specialists who treated the claimants.
• The claimants’ medicines and its dosage
• Test and laboratory results
• Past employments
• For former employees, their latest copy of Wage and Tax Statement (W-2 form)
• For self-employed, their federal tax returns

If the Social Security Administration (SSA) decides to grant a person with disability benefits, some family members are also eligible to receive monetary assistance. Meanwhile, they should meet certain requirements such as:

• The recipient’s spouse is 62 years and older.
• The recipient’s spouse (regardless of his/her age) is caring for their child age below 16 or disabled.
• The recipient’s child (even those who are adopted, stepchild, or grandchild) age 18 years and below and unmarried.
• The recipient’s child who has been disabled before reaching the age of 22.

According to lawyers, the SSA follows strict methods to determine if a person is eligible to receive federal assistance, adding that the agency conducts stringent interviews with doctors and scrutinize every document to make sure that the funds will go to the rightful individuals.

Usually, the SSA will ask the claimants’ doctors about their medical condition, their motor and cognitive abilities, the start of their disability, the treatments and medicines they have received, and the results of the laboratory tests.

Because of these strict requirements, many claimants have been denied with their benefits. Fortunately, SSA allows them to file for an appeal that will let the agency to review their case for at least three times.

Meanwhile, people who have received Social Security benefits for two years will also become eligible to receive Medicaid program which provides medical assistance.
