Long-term Repercussions With Head And Brain Injuries
By: Tom Omalley

Symptoms and Repercussions of a Brain Injury

The spine and head are the main control centers of the body. With thousands of nerves running from the spine and brain to the entire body, many of the long-term symptoms and repercussions of a brain injury can be felt from head to toe. Outward symptoms such as the inability to walk or talk are more obvious, where the many of the behavioral symptoms are more discreet. There are many long-term repercussions that can frustrate and discourage patients. It is important to remember there are many forms of rehabilitation that can greatly help brain injury patients.

Physical and Cognitive Repercussions
Motor, memory, and cognitive skills can be affected after a brain injury. The severity of how these skills are affected can greatly vary depending on the injury and recovery process. A brain injury patient may experience the inability or difficulty of moving certain areas of the body. This can be due to either muscle movement issues or the lack of processing from the brain to the body. If a brain injury has resulted in permanent brain damage a coma or vegetation state can occur.

Emotional and Behavioral Repercussions
There are many cognitive, emotional, and behavioral repercussions of a brain injury that cannot be outwardly seen. Many brain injury patients can experience a change in behavior, even after their physical condition has been healed. It is not uncommon to see increased anger, frustration, and even depression after a brain injury. Many people experience trouble sleeping or even a change in the taste of foods months after the injury occurred.

Brain Injury Assistance
The repercussions and symptoms of a brain injury are broad. They greatly vary depending on the type of injury as well as the individual success of the recovery. Fortunately, many of these symptoms can be helped or even cured with physical therapy and psychological assistance.
