Bad Medicine: Getting The Wrong Prescription
By: Shane Molliwan

In February of 2011, 19-year-old Mareena Silva took what she thought was her prescribed antibiotic after picking it up from her pharmacy in Brooklyn. However, the pill that Mareena took was not an antibiotic, but methotrexate, a drug used to treat the medical conditions of psoriasis and cancer, but also used to terminate early pregnancy. Mareena Silva was pregnant. Despite a pharmacy policy that all personnel match the patient’s full name and birthday to the one on the prescription and then repeat it back to the patient before handing them the prescription, the error still occurred.

Sadly, Mareena’s ordeal is not an isolated incident. Statistics reveal that medical patients routinely receive the wrong medication at pharmacies, in hospitals, and in clinics, sometimes with deadly results. When we are sick or caring for a loved one who is ailing, the farthest thing from our minds is that we might be given a deadly drug by those that we trust to provide competent care for us. Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists are all professionals that we rely upon to treat us, not to inflict harm. Most medical personnel do a very good job of providing that care, but sometimes, either from fatigue, negligence, or distraction, mistakes happen. And when medical mistakes happen to you or to a loved one, the personal cost is ineffable.

Luckily, Mareena Silva received prompt medical attention and, at last report, she and her baby appear to be okay following the incident. But not everyone is as lucky as Mareena. Drugs that are dispensed erroneously to the wrong patients account for many hospitalizations each year. Several result in the death of the patient.
