It’s a tough world out there at the moment. Unemployment is very high and there isn’t much positive to say about the UK’s economy apart from the fact that the Olympics are around the corner…though that may actually end up losing the country money if all the sustainability measures don’t work out, and may lose people more jobs as a result.
So if you are lucky enough to be in a job, what should you do to make sure you keep it?
Work Hard
Well it should go without saying that you should work hard to fulfil the tasks required of your role but everyone knows that they could work that bit harder if they really tried. Well if you are at all in fear of losing your job, go the extra mile, finish that extra task, make your figures extra accurate and sparkle each day. As a stand out employee you should at least be last on the list of people to get the chop.
Don’t Take Days Off
When you’re not in the office, you are out of sight and out of mind; when employers think about who they can do without they will look at people who aren’t there anyway. They won’t hesitate to fire the person whose name they can’t remember of the guy who shows up every day and says hello in the morning.
Expand Your Skills
It can be tempting to sit in your job doing the same thing successfully every day, which is fine, but you need to be thinking about the future at the same time. If there is more than one of you doing your job and one of you has to be fired. Then if you have been working hard on expanding your skills, then you will stand out as the better asset and will be more likely to be kept on.
Check You Legal Rights
For a company to let you go they need to have a good reason. If you think you might be about to be fired then you should take the time to get to know your rights so that if they try to fire you for an unjust reason, then you can stand up and say: “No you can’t fire me! It’s not legal!”
Have a Back Up Plan
If it really does look like you might get the boot for whatever reason, it is always important to have a back-up plan. This might be a side project or maybe a business of your own you have been brewing in your spare time. It is a good idea to have some ideas for self employment in the pipeline so that if you are unfortunate enough to go through a redundancy procedure then you will have a plan.
Sam Qam is a full of ideas for self employment since being made redundant. He also knows a lot more about the redundancy procedure now that he wished he’d known earlier.
