With job cuts on the rise in the UK and in particular in the NHS, times are tough for nurses. Not only that, youth unemployment is at its highest almost ever which will mean that an increasing number of young people will be attempting to enter the attractive field of nursing in the future, making every race for a position more and more competitive.
Luckily you are reading this, which means that you will soon have the knowledge to be able to make yourself stand out from the crowd when you next apply for a nursing job.
Go for the Right Job
One of the most important things you will ever do in your career is to decide on what it is you want to do and where. Going for a job that you are not 100% certain is something you want to do, or is something that will lead you on to something else, is pointless and will make you a weaker candidate.
Think long and hard about what you want to achieve and where you want to go. Once you are completely sure this is what you want to do, go for the job that will help you get there and work extremely hard getting the experience and qualifications you need to get it. This will be clear in your interviews etc. and will make your really stand out.
Perfect CV
When you know there is going to be a great deal of people all going for the same job all with similar qualifications and experience to you, it is extremely important that your CV is perfect. A perfect CV is very easy to read because if the recruiter can’t make it out or there is lots of spelling and grammatical errors they will be happy to throw yours in the bin and have one less CV to worry about. A perfect CV is also laid out in a way that makes all the most important information as easy to find as possible. This might be your previous roles, your qualifications or clinical skill set. Also, making sure that it gets there in plenty of time will give you a better chance.
Interview Skills
Practice your interview over and over again with a friend. Rehearsing what you will reply to a range of questions. It is easy to get flustered and forget to say things when in the interview room so having a go in advance so that it doesn’t seem so strange is a plan. Whether it’s support worker jobs your applying for or specific NHS nursing jobs there will be pertinent questions which you can expect to be asked so do some research first.
Be confident, be clear and concise and don’t forget to make eye contact and dress appropriately.
