One of the most important, if not the most important document you submit in your job search is a cover letter. A good cover letter has identical effect of a refreshing drink of water after a long day in the desert; the letter makes the employers interested in you and makes them want to talk to you more. In order for you to write a quality cover letter, you must know what not to include in it. Here is an example of a bad cover letter:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I saw an advertisement that your company has a job opening. I believe that I am extremely qualified for the position as I have good analytical skills and sound reasoning. I am a dedicated worker and I endeavor to achieve my goals.
I have enclosed my resume to elaborate further about my skills and experience.
I hope to receive a reply from you soon.
Current Salary: $5,000/month
Expected Salary: $ 8,000/month

First and foremost Mr. Job Seeker already committed one crucial mistake at the beginning of his cover letter. Though his cover letter is short, it is not concise and complete. Obviously, he did not research about the company he is applying to, he says he is qualified for the job but does not say how. The appropriate way to write the cover letter is to address it to the hiring manager or employer, not to just anyone in the company.
Another mistake is that he mentioned the skills that most people hold. This does not make him excel at all. What made him qualified for the job? We don’t know because he didn’t say anything. What job position did he apply for? The company could have advertised several openings from a janitorial position to a vice president of sales. It is always suggested to tailor your cover letter according to the job position you are applying for.
Moreover, though he declared he is a hard worker and he endeavors to attain his goals, he will still not get a job interview as most job applicants usually express that in their cover letters. Honestly, everyone is a hard worker in their own definition. When stating these words, make sure you can back it up using past work experience.
Another big fault that our fellow committed is stating his hoped-for salary. In this economic downfall, most companies are low on a budget and as much as possible they would spare cost on employee’s wages. Stating your desired salary on a cover letter is not highly advisable unless the company has stated otherwise. Salary negotiation should be discussed during your job interview. Instead of telling your salary, it is better to shortly mention your capabilities and your future contribution to the company. Be compelling and raise interest. Another thing is to include at the end of your cover letter when you will be available for interview.
Now that you already know examples of what not to include on your cover letter, you can now write an effective one.. Using these fundamental tips and your good sense you should be able to make the best cover letter possible and land your dream job.
