Do People Prefer To Receive Unique NZ Craft & NZ Design Gifts?
By: Zac Yang

The NZ Craft & NZ Design scene is as vibrant and dynamic as ever. From great hobbyist through to internationally recognised designers, you find that perfect little something for your loved ones.

1. Unique Gifts
Ideally you don't want your loved one to know how much you spent or to see it at the Warehouse this weekend. By getting something from a nz craft or zs design perspective you are getting them something which shows some thought and will be cerished for ever.

2. Buying Local
Pretty simple... keep our local economy alive. Buy NZ! You're not paying for it to be shipped from China, you are directly supporting kiwis!

3. A Modern Classic
There are some amazing products out there and we continually see items that are new to the market, sold by a new nz craft person or nz designer, and you can then boast to all your friends.

essentially, it's a win-win... the recipient of your gift gets something amazing, you get the pride of having given them the best gift this year. and you keep the local NZ Craft and NZ Design economy going! You clever kiwi!

One of my favorite NZ Designers is Isla Osborne.... this is from a recent interview:

"Glass is both subject and object in my work and its chemical and physical properties fascinate me. Fluid whilst unyielding, delicate whilst impenetrable, glass can transform from liquid to solid in an instant and still retain the illusion of movement. Lampworking is an ancient and magical process, with chemical intrigue that borders on alchemy. As a contemporary jeweller I find its lure irresistable."

My particular favourite is a red Pohutukawa necklace. Contructed from gravity glass droplets, interlace woven into cord to produce the most sensational effect. The slight translucence used in the glass gives an etherial element to the piece and reminds us of the sun setting through the fronds of the pohutukawa on a warm summer Bay of Islands evening. Just superb.
