Read This Before You Buy Insurance For Self Employed
By: Alston Balkcom

It is expensive to constrain where you shop for a self-employed health insurance plan. Automatically assuming that you will get the best rate through your spouse or domestic partner's employer or by forming a small group can cost you a bundle.

Buying the wrong type of health insurance policy is a far too familiar blunder that small business men and women make all the time. The small business owner may have several choices with it comes to health insurance. Looking at all options is the key to getting the best deal.

It many be the case that buying your coverage through your wife or husband's company-sponsored health plan is the best deal and sometimes it isn't. The coverage may be available without any health history questions. It might also be less expensive. However the premium will depend on whether or not the employer subsidizes the premiums.

It could be that that your wife or husband's employing company will take care of part of their employee's portion of the premium, but will not do so for their dependents. Don't assume that since your wife or husband's cost for health care insurance is reasonable yours will be also. This can mean that you pay more than you should.

Buying your medical insurance coverage this way could mean that you have a problem in the future. An employing company can change the health care insurance coverage options offered to its employees or eliminate it completely. A wife or husband can change employers, die or divorce. All of the above can make a difference in the length of time you get to be insured by your domestic partner or spouse's health insurance.

Acquiring medical insurance as part of a small group that you form is another viable choice. Even very small companies can qualify. You could be able to purchase group insurance with as few as one employee even if the only employee is yourself. In all states having two employees makes you eligible for a group insurance plan.

The advantage of group insurance is being able to medically qualify even if you have a pre existing medical condition. This is a double edged sword. Insurance companies have more claims on these types of policies per policyholder because of this. This means that these policies cost more. Therefore these policies tend to be more expensive some other options.

Buying private health care insurance as an individual can work very well for the small business owner who works alone. Individual medical insurance policies are often very reasonably priced when compared to the other options. Often these policies are not even considered, because people presuppose that group health insurance policies are automatically less expensive than individual person as opposed to a member of a group policies.

These policies can be kept until you are eligible for Medicare. Although you can lose your insurance if you don't pay your premiums on time, if you move out of the servicing area for your contract or if the medical insurer stops selling policies in your state, chances are you can keep your insurance for as long as you need it.

Each of the above choices has both positives and negatives. It is critical that you are aware of your alternatives and don't constrain yourself when shopping around for self-employed health care insurance. This is the best way to be certain that you buy the best policy for your family.
