Installing A Wireless Home Security System: It’s Easier Than You Think
By: John Cherry

If you want to protect your family and your property by installing a home security system, but you don’t have the money to hire a professional home security installation company, you should know that installing a wireless system is well within your capabilities. At one point, the only option homeowners had when it came to home security system was the kind that had to be hard-wired. This meant that you would have to drill holes in your walls to run the wires or have ugly cables running up and down your walls so that your sensors could “talk” to the control panel. However, these days, wireless systems are available and can be easily installed by non-professionals by following these steps.

1. Choose a location for your control panel. It needs to be near your house’s fuse box and within reach of a telephone line. This is because the control panel is the only component that will require electricity and a phone line to communicate with your third-party monitoring company.

2. Install a sensor on each window that leads to the outside of your home. If available with your kit, also install glass break sensors to detect glass breakage.

3. Install a sensor on each door that leads to the outside of your home. These sensors will notify the control panel if the door is open.

4. Install a sensor on your garage door and on the entry door to your garage. If you have a door that leads from your garage to your house, install a sensor on that door too.

5. Install the remote control panel, which is different from the main control panel, near your main entrance. This panel is how you and your family will arm and disarm the system as you enter or leave your property. It is necessary to have this panel close to the door you use to enter your home so you can deactivate it before the siren sounds.

6. Calibrate your system and make sure each sensor is properly sending signals to the control panel. If you are having any trouble, contact your home security company to assist you with the installation. They can often provide you with tips that will make installation even easier than it already is. Finally, if you do not have experience with installing electrical components, it is always best to consult a professional before attempting to install your wireless home security system.
