ALLERGENS BEWARE
By: Torri Myler

If somebody in your household suffers from allergies, spring already makes you nervous. You know the minute pollen from blooming plants starts circulating in the air, there will be red, watery eyes, stuffed noses, itching and swelling, and every other allergy symptom imaginable. Most people tend to stay inside as much as possible in those days, to avoid allergens whenever they can. But what if that does not help and they still have allergic reaction?

Believe it or not, the house environment may be bringing it on, so some steps have to be taken to rid the house of the allergens as much as possible. Most important thing is clean air. Just because nothing can be seen flying around in the living room, does not mean the air is crystal clear. To make sure the particles are trapped away from people, take good care of the air conditioner filters. They have to be changed at least once a month, and for those suffering from extreme allergies, or in the worst time of the year, do not be afraid to change the air conditioner filters more often.

To keep the air clean, you also have to clean the surfaces often. Vacuuming and dusting is very important, as the dirt rises when touched or with stronger air movement, and then it is easy to breathe it in. If you yourself suffer from allergies, make sure to wear a face mask covering your nose and mouth while cleaning, to limit breathing in the dust.

If there are animals in the household, take good care of them by washing in special shampoos and trimming the animal’s hair. Also, keep the animal’s bedding clean by vacuuming out hair and pet dander. If on the other hand you do not have an animal yet, but want to get one, consider getting a special breed that does not shed fur, or maybe does not have it at all, so that every person in the household can spend time with the pet.

Of course medication is important for any person suffering from allergies, but most people wish they did not have to take it too often, if at all. Having the right medication makes it safer and allows for everybody in the family to feel at ease in case of an allergic reaction. Having the right tools to keep the house clean and safe brings just as much piece of mind to the inhabitants.

Start with the right air conditioner filter. You can get different sizes in various efficiency classes, meaning that you can eliminate as much pollution from your house as possible. When vacuuming and dusting, use particle trapping mousse or spray before cleaning. To get the job done, have a versatile vacuum that will get to most places and a dusting cloth that will collect and hold pollen, and that can be used on all surfaces.

So if it is important for you to keep your family healthy, start with your house. When you know different ways to improve the quality of life for an allergy suffering family member, you can make their day by simply changing an air conditioner filter more often, or by vacuuming behind the bookshelf. And you can do it without any professional invading your private space.
